Get ready for an action-packed newsletter today, my friend. When confronted with writing issue #2, I realized that the more proper address would be a binary increment. So that brings us to issue 0x00000010. Read on for some good links I’ve seen over the past week… mainly sent from the people on this list. Keep ’em coming!
iOS Dev Camp
iOS Dev Camp 2013 is coming up in just two weekends! Great opportunity to hone your iOS skills. Assuming there will be a webcast for the ones who can’t get to Mountain View?
Tech developers: Battle Hack Miami needs you
$100,000 is at stake for hackers in 10 cities. The winner of the Miami event this August advances to the Silicon Valley finals, where they take on engineers from around the world. The goal of the PayPal-backed competition “is to find the world’s best hackers.” Any takers?
Apple hires CEO of Yves Saint Laurent
All I can say is wow – didn’t see that coming. Is this the perfect guy to market the iWatch?
Crucible for code review
Yesterday, my ModMed colleague, Alex Rocha, gave a talk on a code review plugin for JIRA called Crucible. Looks very cool, and we’re gonna start using it next sprint. Anybody with experience using Crucible have tips to share? Did you know that JIRA is named after Godzilla, or “Gojira” in Japanese?
DB5 is up on GitHub. What is it?
Ben Rigas sent me a link to this, before I saw it in iOS Dev Weekly. I really like it. It’s a tiny library that lets you configure elements of your app with a theme file, rather than in code. I did something similar to this in 2010, when my first app, Dolphins, blew up and I had to port it to the Heat, Marlins, UF, FSU, etc. I created a config file that held colors, images, feed URLs, and even the order of view controllers in a UITabBar. To edit your app, or create a completely new one, all you have to do is edit this .plist file, then click Build & Run. Unlocks a lot of efficiencies.
Ness – App love child of Yelp and Pinterest
I’m gonna start periodically highlighting an app I think is cool. This week, check out Ness – it helps you find new favorite restaurants, nearby, by understanding your preferences. Great as a UX reference. And free… what’s not to like?
I wrote a blog post for ModMed’s Beyond EMR blog, summarizing what we saw this year at Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference and the Apple Design Awards. Shout out to all our San Francisco friends, both old and new!
A-Trak & Tommy Trash “Tuna Melt” (Official Music Video)
Wanted to include something fun and slightly off-topic: watch as two of my favorite DJs unite in a house full of precariously placed dominos. Yes, it’s real. No, I haven’t a clue how they did it. Thankfully, they also made a behind the scenes.
I have a few more things I’d like to talk about, but this newsletter is already a bit long, wouldn’t you say? Well, stay tuned for next week. Thanks for reading!
