Welcome to the first issue of my newsletter, Evolution or Extinction. Every week, I’ll be sending links about iOS and other techie stuff, the goal being to constantly step up our game. There’s so much news coming out of  WWDC this year, that I felt like kicking this off with a batch of timely iOS links.

iOS 7 Transition Guide

Apple’s guide to updating apps from iOS 6 to iOS 7: from high-level strategy, to what’s changed about each UIControl. If you’re on an iPad, click the ‘Download PDF’ link, then ‘Open in iBooks’ to save a copy for offline viewing.

Apple Human Interface Guidelines (updated for iOS 7)

This is the bible, and therefore worth re-reading from time to time. I like this quote: “Be prepared to defy precedent, question assumptions, and let a focus on content and functionality motivate every design decision.”

iPad templates

Print-outs for prototyping iPad apps with pen & paper. There’s also an iPhone version. Believe it or not, a paper sketch can hugely boost efficiency by refining your idea (before you fire up Xcode).

Lighter View Controllers

Saw this in the iOS Dev Weekly newsletter. It’s actually the first edition of a different newsletter called objc.io. I found their approach to reusing code in table & collection views very compelling. It also has some good guidance on MVC separation, unit testing, and view controller containment. Worth a look if you missed it the first time.

Iterate 48: iOS 7 design special (Part 1)

Thoughtful conversation among some of the most renowned iOS designers, regarding their likes and dislikes of the new OS. Hosted by Rene Ritchie, one of my faves, and includes award-winning iOS warrior-priest Loren Brichter, of Letterpress fame.

That’s it! Thanks for tuning in. Leave a comment below with your likes, dislikes or suggestions.

Shout outs:

  • My wife Ali, who encouraged me to do this, and helped create the site.
  • The awesome team at ModMed, my employer.
  • Dave Verwer, who’s excellent iOS Dev Weekly was a major influence in the formation of this newsletter.

Seems like some useful concise links. I’ll probably bookmark this first issue since I know I’ll be visiting most if not all these links at some point in the future.
