Thanks for all the links this week – this newsletter is so much better with your help. Keep them coming!
And Then Steve Said, ‘Let There Be an iPhone’
A fascinating read about some of the many challenges behind creating the original iPhone. Looking forward to this guy’s book. My buddy and sometimes co-conspirator Josh gets a shout out… pretty cool!
Coin Introduces Arduino-BLE Developer Kit
I’ve been talking a lot about iBeacons and Bluetooth Low Energy. This is a very inexpensive way to start playing around with it yourself (when it ships in December). This blog post also talks about many applications of the technology, before getting into some really cool circuit diagrams. Thanks for the link, @Dom.
3 Essential Tips For Redesigning An App For iOS 7
It’s gonna take a while for the potential of iOS 7 to play out, as 3rd party developers recreate their apps. Here’s another case study with some different angles.
Helios – an extensible open-source mobile backend framework
New project from Mattt, the guy behind AFNetworking and contributor to objc.io. You can imagine it like an open-source version of Parse, deployed on Heroku, that includes some additional cool stuff like push notification and in-app purchase. Also, note AFIncrementalStore at the bottom of the page, which again is similar to Parse in that it’s a networked mobile backend, but interfaces seamlessly with Core Data. Could be seen as a cross-platform replacement for iCloud. Lots of goodies here. I also like how they put an emoji in their title tag. 😀 Link courtesy @tre3notas.
Adobe Source Code Leak Is Bad News for U.S. Government
You thought it was tough hearing that Adobe lost the names and credit card numbers of almost 3 million people? I sure did, being one of them. Turns out the damage may be much more severe, as they also lost a bunch of source code – which will make it easier for hackers to trojan PDFs. This is my periodic reminder that no security is absolute: we all have flaws that can be exploited and holes that need to be plugged. Don’t wait until you’re on the front page of the Wall Street Journal to address them.
1Password 4 for Mac is here
Worried about account security after reading the last story? One of my most indispensable apps just got an update. I’ve been using and loving 1Password since 2008 – I know, because that’s how far back my password history goes. Since then, I’ve logged 875 unique (and highly secure) logins. Check out their upgrade pricing, they have some great deals.
Sumo Jerky
Crazy and genius sure have a lot in common. What started as a challenge to make $1,000 in one day has turned into a CEO search for a jerky website. Do you love jerky? Maybe you could be the next big dot-com success story!
Eyezeeu
Sorry to get a little bit sappy on you, but I’m dedicating today’s newsletter to my wonderful wife, Ali. We got married on 10/10/10 (yep, binary) and today is our three year anniversary. Thank you for the huge amount of support and encouragement, babe – I love you! ♥
